Type styles are hierarchical: Manual overrides supersede any applied character styles, which in turn replace applied paragraph styles. This hierarchical approach lets you combine the efficiency of styles with the flexibility to customize your designs.

Double-click existing styles to edit them and update all associated text in the current document. When you change the formatting of a style, all text to which the style has been applied will be updated with the new format.
The layer styles that come with Photoshop are grouped into libraries by function. So one library would contain styles to create web buttons, while another would contain styles for adding effects to text.
While creating custom layer styles, use contours to control the shape of Drop Shadow, Inner Shadow, Inner Glow, Outer Glow, Bevel, and Emboss. Use a Linear contour on a Drop Shadow to make the opacity drop off in a linear transition and a Custom contour to create a unique shadow transition.
To expand or collapse all of the layer styles applied within a group, hold down Alt (Win) or Option (macOS) and select the triangle or inverted triangle for the group. The layer styles applied to all layers within the group will expand or collapse correspondingly.
Photoshop layer styles help you add effects (e.g. drop shadows and strokes) in a non-destructive way. To achieve them, you need to understand what each setting does and how you can combine them. Photoshop CS6 can have layer styles applied to groups. Groups can be nested. This is probably the best way to do it, because it's neat and everything scales nicely when you scale the document (for Retina etc).

Character styles only include differences, such as All Caps, from the attributes specified in the paragraph style. You can apply this character style to text formatted with any paragraph style, with any character attributes, and All Caps will be applied. This means you can have a single character style for Bold text, for example.

Using Photoshop Styles is a breeze. Once you learn how the Style Effects work, you can enhance your text and images to help them pop off the page or screen. Editing styles is a bit more complicated, but still not too difficult.
4. Next, select Layers > Blending Options > New Style and enter a name, such as Base (for your basic, empty Style). Notice that all the effects in the Styles panel on the left are blank, with no checked boxes. Click OK, and now you have a base/foundation on which to build new styles.

Simple grayscale gradients such as the one below are often used alongside inner shadow styles like we used earlier to create an even more realistic letterpress effect. All the standard settings have been used; the only thing that has been changed from the default settings is the color of the gradient itself.

The font style dropdown menu is available in the Type toolbar or the Character panel. The default on the dropdown should say Regular, and once clicked it should give you options for different styles.
